“My sculptures are inspired by nature and human industry. Using stoneware, porcelain, slips and metal oxides, I work instinctively making forms that possess raw and refined qualities - the incidental marks that occur during this time direct my making process.

Starting with slabs and then scraps of clay I build a hollow form, the pieces of clay are joined together a bit like a collage, then paint with vitreous slips and fired repeatedly until the surface and the form are balanced. These works appear bleached out and weather worn; referring to corroded stone and metal. The pieces are constructed and then cut down and re-joined, modelled elements evoke old paint palettes and sculptors remnants.

In his book ‘Ceramics’ Philip Rawson said,

“Each pot represents a primal interweaving of matter, human action and symbol.”

Through my studies the vitality of traditional craft and the role of clay in civilisation became significant for me. I am interested in the narrative of sacred and profane clay artefacts and the notion of the unknown craftsman."
